President's Message
Hello, fellow culinarians! May 20, 2023
I want to start by thanking Chef Jimmy Hill from the ACF Lansing Chapter for inviting me to participate in this year's annual symposium showcasing his students at Lakeland Correctional Center. Several chefs traveled to participate in a Q and A with the students. It also included an eight-course luncheon that was outstanding. Chef Jimmy runs a great program, and I recommend that if you have the opportunity to watch the new documentary about the program, you take the time to watch it. It is up for a James Beard award!
The month keeps getting better, and I want to give a huge shoutout to Dietrich and Autumn Bronner for opening their lovely home and property to our membership for the May chapter meeting. I would be remiss if I did not mention that Venture Catering provided an awesome dinner prepared by chefs Lance Buchinger, Tyler Stark, Ray Quick, Wayne Cormier, Brandon Reeve, and Jennifer Reeve. It was truly delicious. In addition, there was also a presentation by **, who informed us about how to start, grow, and manage grapes vines for wine production. I was surprised to hear that a row of grapes approximately fifty feet in length produced twenty-one gallons of juice.
This year's ACF National Convention is being held in New Orleans from July 16th through 19th. Sending out luck and well wishes to Chef Bob Zehnder, CEC, as he competes for ACF Chef Educator of the Year.
Our last meeting of the spring will be held at the Montague Inn in Saginaw on Monday, June 19th. Chef Tom Wood and his staff are catering this meeting. I am looking forward to seeing you at our last meeting before the summer break.
Keep cooking,
Mark Handy, CEC, AAC
